About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience
I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.

Question
Hi, Can you please tell me what the best finishing coat would be to put onto freshly painted kitchen cabinets. We used Ben Moore paint made specifically for cabintes, which has some urethane already built into it, but I would like the finish to have a little more sheen. Any recommendations as to what we should use? Thanks.
Shay

Answer
Hi Shay
Nice to hear from you.
Shay these paints are not suppossed to have a clear coat applied over them.
They stand on their own. Its unfortunate you did not apply the correct sheen at the time as you are not in a great situation now to apply a clear coat unless the paint you used was waterbased.
If its oil based paint, any clear coat will have to be oil based and it will yellow over time. It will look like heavy smokers live in the kitchen.
If its waterbased apply a coat of water based poly. Water based poly does not yellow.
I would try a test on the back of a door with a satin sheen poly and also a gloss sheen poly to see which is the best look.
I like Minwax polys but there are others out there.
Great question
Regards
Eileen
