AboutEileen Cronk Expertise Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.
Experience I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
Question I have an older wall entertainment unit from the early 80's that might look good painted Black. I would assume that I need to sand the unit first and then paint it. Is there any special paint I should be using? Then should I put a clear shellac on it?
Answer Hi Tina
Nice to hear from you.
With any paint job we do, the surface prep is the most important step.
A light sanding is needed as you suggest. Use 120 grit paper.
Use a water based acrylic latex paint. Personally I would use a satin sheen paint but its your choice.
Get the best quality paint the store sells and there is no need to clear coat. I don't know how or where this idea originated but a good quality paint needs no clear coating.
Tina this unit will look great painted black.
Best of luck
Regards
Eileen
