About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience
I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.

Question
Several years ago, I stripped an old dresser ( maybe oak)  and then applied Deft
clear coat.  I now want to use a black gel stain on the dresser.  Do I have to use
a liquid stripper or can I just sand the dresser before staining?

Answer
Hi Denise
Nice to hear from you.
In order to stain this piece all the finish must be removed with paint stripper.
You cannot remove a finish by sanding it off. It will not work and you will end up ruining the piece although if you plan on using a black gel stain on an old oak dresser that will pretty much ruin it anyway.
I guess I'm telling you to reconsider your color choice LOL.
Kind regards
Eileen
