Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Teak Wood

Question
I have just inherited a wood teak kitchen table and sideboard.  It seems quite dirty, and I can't figure out how to clean it.  It also has a few small water stains.

Is there something special to use to clean teak tables?  And anything you know of that might get out water marks from cups.

Thank you,

Answer
Hi Amanda
Nice to hear from you
I am very familiar with your problem.
I would use varsol (hardware store), and fine steel wool as a scrub pad to clean this furniture. Dip the steel wool in the varsol and give the pieces a gentle scrub. Dry as you go with clean rags.
Next you have these water spots.
Use more elbow grease with the steel wool on these areas and I am hoping they will come out.
Then apply an oil finish like tung oil. Circa 1850 tung oil in a low sheen is my choice.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
