Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/refi dresser

QuestionI have an oak dresser I want to finish in distressed dark dark brownish black to match my headboard that I purchased. The dresser was refinished once before and I'm guessing has a Poly-type finish. I would like the finish to be somewhat streaked ie., the wood color beneath show through slightly. Then a semi-gloss finish.I also would like to hide the grain of the oak,if possible,sa I don't really care for it. What do you think is the best and easiest way to go about this, or am I looking at the impossible? Thank you for your previous advice. I'm sorry I can't send pictures. Thanks again!
AnswerHi Karen
Nice to hear from you.
First the dresser will need a light sanding so a new finish will stick.
Use 120 grit sandpaper.
Next will be a coat of your dark dark brownish black.
A trip to the paint store with a color sample will be in order to get the exact color you want in a waterbased paint.
If you only apply one coat with a coarse brush you should get the streaky look you want and have some of the original color show through.
If done with care you should still be able to hide the wood grain and get this streaky look.
Only work in one direction with your brush and follow the existing wood grain.
Then a coat of semi gloss water based poly over everything.
And you know Karen, its only paint, if it turns out awful, then a solid coat of your dark dark brownish black followed by a poly coat will look great with the headboard too.
Just do your best.
Kind Regards
Eileen
