Question
Hi Jamie,
I am starting a kitchen remodel and am wondering what type of  kitchen cabinet wood is best for painting?
Thanks,
Cindy

Answer
Cindy,

Since you're planning on painting the wood, you have a lot of options out there. I would recommend Poplar, Birch or Alder, as they are all closed grained woods. Also, they are fall into the range of less expensive woods, as opposed to Cherry, Maple or Walnut.

Most likely, the cabinet "boxes" you buy will be plywood with a nice wood veneer. I've not seen Poplar or Alder plywood, but Birch is relatively common and quite reasonably priced. Therefore, I would request a paint-grade Birch plywood box. It takes paint well. Ask if you can have solid wood edging, as opposed to that thin "iron-on" edging. It's more durable, and shouldn't be WAY more expensive.

With the money you save, you could even spend a tad more and get a solid wood doors, to dress up the kitchen. Just a thought...

Good luck, write back if you have more questions.
