Question
I inherited a maple dining set that was purchased in the 60s or 70s. The set is in pretty good shape except the top area of the chairs which is rough and darkened. What can I do to improve the looks of this?

Hi Patricia, the first thing I would do is clean the areas with mineral spirits to make sure to remove the dirt, oils, etc., thoroughly. You might also use some 0000 steel wool, CAREEFULLY, but deliberately, and wipe as you go with some light colored rags, so you can see if the grime is coming off. If you're not able to make this look a lot better with this method, then the chances are you're looking at more serious finish restoration which may be beyond your skill set...can you post a picture?
