Hi, my name is joe i have the stairs to the 2nd floor all scuffed up like for 20 years the people before us used there hard shoes to go up and down ,3 years ago i put seedoil and it looked good but it had it ,it is a natural oak stairs done by the builder when fist build ,i would like to do it a little bit darker,do i have to strip right down or just enough to take all the shine out and little more .also concern steps not to get missed spots like were there is scuff marks now it will show ,do i sand to bare wood ,and spinntilles to please give me run down on how not to get marks what is best to use  thank you

Answer
Hi Joe, you'd be much better off to strip the treads with stripper. That will clean everything off and leave you with clean, bare wood to stain darker and refinish. I would suggest a Gel stain, followed by 2-3 coats of a good Polyurethane floor finish. If the spindles are finished as well, and you want to match them to the treads, you'll have to do the same to them as you do to the treads....hope that helps- regards- Greg
