Question

DSCN1904.JPG
I need to make a custom TV stand to place between two black painted book
shelves with cherry crown moulding and cherry shelves.  The book cases are
from an all but discontinued Ethan Allen Shaker line.  How do I match the painted
black finish and the cherry finish?

Answer
Hey Mark, it's most likely a lacquer finish, black lacquer and then the Cherry might be stained and/or 'toned' with toning lacquers to even it out and give it some depth....the real answer to your question is "skill, knowledge and experience"....but it will depend on what color the Cherry you use is...and remember that Cherry changes color over time as well with exposure to UV light...it looks like a Satin or flat sheen, so that would be the gloss level of your final clear coat, so you would need to stain the Cherry to match with a good stain(s), (I like the General waterborne Dye stains or the Oil wiping stains, or even a combination of the two....often it's necessary to 'tweak' the stains to make a match, or layer the dye stains followed by a coat of pigmented stain, etc.), and then maybe a Cherry or Brown Cherry dye based toner if needed, spray the black areas with a sanding sealer, sand smooth and then a coat or 3 of Satin Black lacquer, and then once the color looks good, Satin or flat lacquer the whole piece to match....figure out the finishing schedule on some scrap FIRST, so then you can repeat it over the whole piece once you've got the schedule that gets you there. Hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
