Question

picnic table lettering
i build picnic tables on occasion and i put peoples names on
them. in the past Ive made a template on the computer, cut
out , and traced it on the table then filled it in with ink
like a sharpie magic marker after the second coat of spar
varnish has been steel wooled. (marker ink bleeds into the
grain of the wood if put on before stain and some finish). Ive ran across some paper that is sticky on one surface and
thought i could use it as a template and spray the lettering
on with paint but haven't tried it yet.i have used spar
sprayed on wood to block the stain shown in picture. so in
general what do finishers do if they want art work or
lettering on a project. also if spraying is an option , what
kind of spray paint would work.  any help would be
appreciated.   lost in finishing:  fred

Answer
Hey Fred...there's a masking product called 'Frisket', that airbrushers use...it comes in sheets and rolls and is available at most good Art supply places...and an airbrush with airbrush pigment would probably be a good choice but,you could just use Krylon spray paint, a lacquer based product, for your template work. Over time, marker will likely fade and start to show the streaks.....unlike something like the Krylon or Rustoleums "Universal" spray paint...

Hope that helps a little- regards- Greg
