Question
QUESTION: I had custom kitchen cabinets made in cherry and I wanted them stained w/ varnish. They were delivered natural with varnish. He took them back and said to get it done quickly he would mix the varnish and stain and have them done in 2 days. I said no, I wanted them stripped, stained and revarnished. The cabinets came back with streaks and brush marks and were cloudy. I suspect he mixed the varnish with the stain but he says no. What are your thoughts?

ANSWER: Hi Nancy, he shouldn't be brushing varnish on cabinets anyway...but it does sound like he ignored your request....and he has a responsibilty to satisfy you, the customer....is this the cabinet maker?...or someone else?...

QUESTION: It's the cabinet maker. It really looks terrible. I'm asking for money back because who knows what they would look like if he did them again. What percentage do you think is fair? There are 54 doors/drawers.

Answer
I'm sure if they were redone and done correctly...they'd be fine.....did you see other cabinet work he had finished? And then where are you....stuck with a big, botched job??Hopefully you withheld money until the job was complete??He has a duty to see the job through, and fulfill his obligation........sounds to me that he is NOT a finisher...proper cabinet finishing is an art, and a properly applied, state of the art finish, meeting KCMA standards, should give you a maintenance free life of 20+ years....
