Question
Hi, I have a homeowner that would like new white balusters in  place of the old stained ones.
The hole in the tread is 5/8 which I can enlarge to accept the new 3/4" baluster.
But on the rail I also need to make the hole larger... Any thoughts?  The shortest spindles I can find are 34". going down the stairs, I need 25" and about 28". When you cut that much off you are left with about a 13/16" top.
does that sound right? Thanks

Answer
When I was faced with the same circumstance, I would use a boring bit to enlarge the holes, taking care that they did "drag" as it would "rip" the wood.   Most 1-1/4" balusters have a 5/8" dowel top.   1-3/4" balusters tend to have a 3/4" dowel top.

What style of balusters are you planning to use?  Many patterns can be available in a 31" minimum.

Let me know the style and see what I can find for you.
