Question
QUESTION: I bought a finished corner shelf but when I went to install it, realized the walls aren't square (my house is over 100 years old)so the shelf doesn't fit in the corner square. There is a gap on either side. Any ideas for how to modify the shelf to make it fit?

ANSWER: Hi Julie, the way to do it is to hold it in position and scribe it to fit, then remove the excess area with a scroll saw, belt sander, band saw or similar tool to make a snug fit. It's a very common problem, hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg

QUESTION: Actually, there isn't any excess material on the shelf. There is a shortage. I need about a quarter inch more shelf on each side to get it to touch the wall. Thanks!

Answer
Then the problem is in the corner, and material will need to be removed there to allow the shelf to snug up to the walls.Likely the shelf has a fairly sharp 90 degree corner, and the typical wall has a somewhat rounded intersection where the two walls come together.....so you'll need to remove material from the very corner to mimic the shape of the wall. Your original complaint was about walls out of square....this is something different, but it is entirely possible that both conditions exist, and the shelf will have to be fitted to the space.
