Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Wood Finish

Question
Hi Greg: A friend of ours bought a new cherry wood dining set with a satin finish. Unfortunately a grandchild put a large mark on it (but not through to the wood). We well able to buff out the mark with steel wool, but want to get back to the satin finish. Any ideas?

Greatly appreciate any insights you can offer.

Answer
Hey Joe, once you use steel wool on a surface like this, (which is an abrasive), you'll have to treat the whole surface, and most of these finishes are "off the gun", meaning no rubbing or final prep is done after the final spray coat....but some are rubbed out, but there are several ways to do that with several different techniques to get a certain look... yours might be different, I'd have to see it to know....but I would consider getting a Pro in to evaluate it with you.....dealing with a finished surface like this takes knowledge and experience with lacquers/Urethanes, etc., to know what direction to go......wish I had a better answer, but this is specialized....  post back if need be.....regards- Greg
