Question
Hello,
I bought six 1960's teak dining chairs at auction and while I love the style, I do not love the seemingly years of grime that came with them! Short of stripping them, is there a product that will remove the dirt- I don't have much spare time, so something easy and quick would be ideal. Also, I know it's asking a lot, but in consideration of my lungs, I would prefer the least noxious product.
Much appreciated,

Bev Harvey

Answer
Hi Bev
Nice to hear from you.
There is a product that will remove this grime.
Its called mineral spirits.
First try a rag dipped in the spirit.
If this does not lift the grime you change to steel wool.
Dip the steel wool in the spirit and use it as a gentle scrubber.
I guarantee this will completely remove all the grime.
To me, mineral spirit is not noxious but it has a strong smell. So use it outdoors with no problem.
It will not hurt your hands.
Use fine steel wool. Dry with clean rags as you go. Follow with a nice wax.
Properly dispose of all cleaning rags.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
