Question
My dining room table has white spots (from hot cups being placed on it).  I have tried several methods to remove the spots including mayonnaise, toothpaste and steamed heat.  The white spots are still there and the shiny finish has been removed while I was trying to remove the spots.  I need to know how to remove the spots and restore my shiny finish.  Please help.

Answer
Hi Resa...One should never smear mayonaise, peanut butter, etc. on ones furniture...the only thing they can do is allow oil to contaminate the surface, making it difficult to effect a proper repair. The oil will darken wood temporarily, but it's a very temporary fix, if it works at all.If you introduce oil or grease/wax, etc. into the wood, it will contaminate it and and finishing materials will not stick to the wood. Your table is likely lacquer, and this is not easy to fix, especially if you've now lost the gloss as well, as that means the clear coat is compromised...this is not the realm of the novice, and needs the attention of a Pro who can evaluate it with you. Lacquer finishes are sprayed on and restoration of them is possible, unless the wood has been compromised.....then stripping and refinishing is necessary. Feel free to post back- regards- Greg
