Question
Dear Greg,
Refinishing a built in desk for my daughter.  I've stripped off the old paint ( a mixture of latex and oil layers#, patched holes and I'm ready to prime.  My schedule will be oil based primer and oil paint because I'm matching the house trim.  What do I use to create durability for the top of the desk assembly?  A clear coat #oil / water )?  Plexiglas glass?  Please help.

Working hard in Al.

Answer
Hi Russ, a good oil enamel will be pretty durable,I use a catalyzed Acrylic Urethane over paint  in some situations, but a piece of glass is the ultimate solution to keep it in the best shape. Just make sure she knows it's glass...and breakable, and it will protect your perfect paintjob forever....and it's easy to clean Sharpie, glues, paste, stickers, nailpolish, etc......that she will undoubtedly be using at her desk...take it from me, I know, as I built a desk for my 14 year old daughter thinking that 3 coats of Benjamin Moore enamel, and a clear coat would suffice....she ruined that within a month......
