Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/wood lamp base

Question
Dear Jamie,
I am also a volunteer, a plumbing expert. I have been designing and making stained glass art for 30 years [my avocation]. I want to make a table lamp with a square solid wood base. I have woodworking tools. My idea: a tall square shade sitting on a wood base. I have patterns for drilling the holes for the threaded rod and cord, and I want to place the on/off switch in the base. I can't find plans for doing this after hours hunting online. Any ideas? Thanks for being a volunteer!  Sharon

Answer
Sharon,

There are a few places I find plans online - here are a few plans for lamps:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/woodworking/1273236.html

When you said you wanted make a lamp with "a square solid wood base", I wasn't sure if you wanted the base to be square, or the whole lower lamp (the lamp's overall shape) to be square. I made a cube lamp a while ago (out of wood) and it came out quite nice. I think my dimensions were something like 8"x8"x8", and it was quite simple to construct.

Even though that last plan is for a floor lamp, I think it can be tweaked to turn it into a table lamp, if that's what you're wanting to make

Anyway, take a look at these plans, and if you need more help, write back and I'll try to be more specific. Bit I have a feeling that first plan (above) might be what you're looking for.

Hope this helps! Keep volunteering!
