Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/wood rocker/glider with looseness in side to side movement

Question
Hi, Greg.  I have a second-hand wood rocker/glider with matching ottoman and there is a lot of side to side movement in the chair.  This seems to have been the cause of several of the round wooden rods connecting the base to split (prior to me receiving.)  I've gotten replacement rods which are now drilled out with hardware in place and ready to be installed, however I don't want to do that if the cause of the splitting will cause it again.  The issue is not knowing what to look for for the bolts/casters that facilitate what should be just forward and back movement.  I've seen articles on other sites that mention "repair kits" but have yet to find any so am hoping to get advice on how to proceed... maybe through just suggestion of purchasing individual components?  No luck from Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace.

Answer
Hi Kristina, often broken parts means the entire frame is loose or somethings broken,( like a tenon) that allows the whole frame to rack and put too much stress on the assembly....your particular glider/rocker will have to be examined closely to see what's up with it, and it's really almost impossible for me to diagnose it from here....I would turn it upside down to remove the weight from the base assembly and carefully examine the whole base to see if you can figure it out.Be careful, though as you could pinch fingers, hands and other parts during this investigation, a second or even third set of hands and eyes is a good idea.Often these just wear out and parts are not available for most of them...Please post back if need be- regards- Greg
