Question
Dear Greg,
Unfortunately I have burnt my pine kitchen table. I put a hot dish on it and now the wood looks darker as if there is a stain also with white discoloration patches. I am wondering how I can repair it. Will a coat of varnish do? Do I need to sand and then varnish the whole surface?

Hi Adir, if the wood is actually burned, the table will have to be stripped, sanded and refinished, or more, as burn damage can go deep into the wood. Varnish will tend to enhance any discoloration, making it look even worse. This damage sounds bad enough, that it won't be easy to fix, and if you don't have any experience doing this type of work, dining table surfaces are difficult to refinish well.It's not really a job for a novice.Post back if need be, but I would call in a Pro to evaluate the damage with you.
