Question
I just purchased a new AAA rated solid teak bench. The bench is untreated. I plan in using the bench indoors in my front entrance. I would like to stain the wood a dark brown or black, but can't find specific information about how to do this and what products to use. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Laura, you could try a dye stain like Generals Waterborne dye, but the bench would likely not take any color until, and if, it weathers. Teak has a high natural resin content, and it is likely that it has been finished with a penetrating oil finish. Factories almost always apply at least a sealer before sending the product out, for a few reasons. In the case of Teak, it would be a penetrating, Teak oil product, that would further prohibit penetration even further. If you put this bench outside for a few months, then bring it in, let it dry out, sand it lightly, yet evenly overall, it will then take a stain. Hope that helps- post back if need be- Greg
