Question
I have an old slant top secretary.  The desk door had a "slider" about 10 inches long to restrain the door and keep it flat when it was opened.  Would you know where I could find a replacement for that slider?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Marvin,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the term "slider" but I think you might mean a simple piece of wood that slides out, to support the top. Does that sound about right? It's not a piece of hardware, right?

If it's just a piece of wood, you could probably take that to any local woodworker and they could cut you a new one. Bring the old one with you. Look for cabinetmakers or woodshops in the phonebook. Or try your local high school's woodshop. A box of doughnuts (as a bribe) will go a long way to get someone to cut you a new piece. It's a very simple thing to cut, if I'm picturing the right part in my mind.

It's the "slider" is hardware... when I need a specialty piece of hardware, I go to Van Dyke's website, they specialize in pieces and parts for older furniture. Here's their website: http://www.vandykes.com/

If all else fails, and you're not too far from me, send the part to me and I'll cut you a new one. Include a couple bucks into the box for postage and I'll be glad to cut you a replacement and stick it back into your box. You'll have it in no time. If you need my address, let me know.

Good luck, hope this helps.
