Question
Hi Eileen,

I have to retouch some areas of veneered wood paneling in my house that is finished in a matte solvent based varnish. I am having a lot of trouble finding such a product in Toronto. Any ideas? Thank you.

Andres

Answer
Hi Andres
Sorry but I'm unclear exactly why the panelling needs retouching.
Are there areas that have been scratched down to bare wood and stick out like a sore thumb?
All thats needed is to apply some Minwax oil based stain in a color close to the panelling.
Just dip a rag in the stain and wipe it over the areas if thats the case.
This instantly hides the marks.
If you get into applying varnish of any kind over the panelling just in damaged areas you will have a mess on your hands. These areas will stick out like the sore thumb I mentioned above LOL.
Get back if needed.
Regards
Eileen (just North of Orillia)

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
