Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Bringing color to a teak dining table

Question
Hi,  I have a teak dining table (~60 yrs old, now stripped and cleaned) which I want to color a light yellow, green, or blue.  I would then rub white wax into the finish to accent the grain, and then top coat.  I am told dyes will not work so I guess paint is my only alternative.  I'm trying to achieve a sort of 'French country kitchen' look.  Am I nuts...probably, but will not be deterred.  Help!   Tim

Answer
Hi Tim
You are not nuts LOL
I like your idea.
But forget about the wax before the top coat.
Use this stain in your color choice.

Dyes will work but not necessary on teak, and don't paint the table.
After staining apply two coats of matte finish or satin poly.
My choice is Minwax fast drying oil based poly in a satin sheen.
You could apply wax after the final poly but I think you will see that its not necessary.
Great project.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
