Question
QUESTION: I have a four poster full sized bed that has belonged to me for 60 years. I want to strip it and paint it white for my grand daughter. I have done some refinishing before but never painted a piece only stained them. Can you give me some tips.
Thank you, Gail Mannos

ANSWER: Hi Gail, if the finish is intact, no chipping, flaking, etc., then you can clean it well, prime it and paint it. I would recommend spraying the finish if possible, as it always yields superior results, and a good aerosol like Krylon or the Rustoleums line can give excellent results with a little learning of spray technique. The key is applying just the right amount to allow the finish to flow out properly, yet not too much that you risk drips and runs...it's a fine line, as applying too little will result in a rough, "sandy" finish. Post back and I'll gladly help further if need be- regards- Greg

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your advise. Can you tell me if the spray paints you recommend are toxic free? Also, should I use a primer? What kind do you suggest? Should I use Semi Gloss or flat?

Answer
Unfortunately, all spray paints are NOT going to be toxic free in their liquid state, but the resulting finish, when dry and fully cured, would be considered non-toxic....you can buy a latex spray paint, (Even Latex is NOT toxin free, as solvents are an integral part of any finish), but they will not give you the finish you're after, as they just do not perform as well. If you're that concerned, I would look into having the job done by someone else.I would definitely recommend a primer, and just go with a primer from the same brand...a white primer will be available.....I like either Krylon or Rustoleum's Universal enamels, both are capable of a very professional looking finish, aand a sprayed finish is always superior in look and texture to anything done with a brush/rollers.....but of course, spraying also has special considerations as to ventilation, a dry, dust free environment (or outside on a calm, warm day)...etc.
