Question

quick release tab on r
Hi Jamie.  We bought a new file cabinet and it is so heavy there is no way we can move it up our stairs.  We want to take out the drawers, but the latching mechanism is really difficult and we can't figure out how to remove it.  My husband even found the engineering diagram that said which tabs to press for "quick release" - it says to press the black tab on the far right - but as far as we can tell, they don't really do anything at all.  He is at the point where he's about to dismantle the drawer completely and take out the screws, but we thought we'd at least try and find someone who could help first.  I'm attaching a picture of the hardware - it's a Knape & Vogt sliding mechanism. Thanks.

Answer
Amy,

I am familiar with that KV drawer slide. If it's the slide I think it is, I believe you activate the black clip at the front of the slide - I can't remember if you push it in or down, but once it frees itself, you sort of lift the drawer off in an upward direction, pulling it toward you.

There are small hooks on the very back (top) end of the slide, and there is also a little hole in the top part (drawer box) component. The hole slides over the little "hook", and then the clip activates, locking the box component to the cabinet interior component.

I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but just know that once you get that black tab to disengage, you lift upward and the box will come off the slide itself. It's a little tricky, but once you see how they lock together, you'll go - duh!

Good luck, write back if you need more help.
