I had a similar problem on a 2 drawer lateral file that used heavy duty (150#) Knape & Vogt sliding mechanisms.   You must first remove one screw from each slide - this is located near the front of the slide close to the plastic release latch.  My file cabinet also had a rope connecting the 2 drawers so that only one drawer could be opened at a time.
