Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/table finish is sticky

Question
Hi, Hoping you can help! I bought a table (new) from JCPenney about 5 years ago... it is a kitchen set that opens to a square, they say it's maple, the problem  pretty much right from the start the table has been sticky, it had a smell from the start but figured that would go away as it was not in the box and it did but after about 2 months the table top is sticky and has been ever since, newspapers, paper plates, napkins, tablecloths you name it stick to this thing... we want to refinish it but not sure how and not sure if it's worth it... i paid $600 for the stupid thing so we hate to get rid of it, oh and on a normal day if wearing shorts our legs stick to the chairs also... it is a big table that opens to a square (butterfly leaf) so not really sure what to do... needless to say i go through a lot of tablecloths and yes, the flannel back ones stick the worst... takes a lot of scrubbing to get the flannel off.
this was not the frist table or furniture i bought from Penney's but it is the most disappointing!
thanks!

Answer
Hi Wendy, what do you clean the table with...your regular cleaning regimen? Some cleaners can attack the finish and eventually soften it.......I would say it's worth refinishing, but the old finish needs to be stripped off to bare wood....if you've never done this type of work, or a dining table, I would look into having it professionally done....or at least start with the restoration of a chair seat to see what's entailed, and how to arrive at a pleasing end result.....post back- Greg
