Question
Hi Greg,
I am doing some work with veneer for the first time;
I have to replace a piece of damaged on a fireplace mantel
Are there any pointers that come immediately to mind?
I seem to think I need to be careful to glue properly so as not to affect stain absorption; Should I be concerned?
And also, What do you think of applying the stain and Top coat before I glue the piece?
will the top coat crack easily from the flimsy veneer
Hey Lorne- I would not prefinish the piece, and you should not have to worry about those other concerns. Remove the damaged veneer section, scrape off any glue residue, and cut and dry fit your repair, then glue it on. I am NOT a fan of contact cement, so try to use conventional or Hide glue and clamp in place until set. then sand , blend and finish to match- Post back if need be- Greg
