Question
Have a cutting board that came with kitchen cabinets - it slides into section above a set of drawers.  I use it all the time but it looks pretty beaten up.  Would like to know what to do to make it look a little better.  Sand it down??  What to put or rub into or on it??  Of course, it will have food on it and afrter using it I always wash it down with a tiny bit of soap and lots of hot water.  It is in good shape - after 24 years it hasn't split or cracked yet.
Thanks for whatever you can share with me.

Answer
Hi Rose
Nice to hear from you.
I have an under counter cutting board like yours.
Every couple of years I take it out and sand it.
I use my palm sander and 120 grit sandpaper.
I have heard of some folks rubbing cooking oil on the boards but I feel it goes rancid and smells after a while.
So the best thing to apply is nothing. Just your usual cleaning like you do.
Really amazing how well these boards stand up. Mine has to be going on 40 years old.
Great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
