Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/ceruse

Question
Hi Greg

I recently saw a remodeling show where they used ceruse to oak crown molding and would like to give it a try. Looked like they started with a dark stain then used white paint.

I was hoping you could tell me what exactly to look for when buying the dark stain and white paint or pigment? Also where to buy the products and some instructions would be great?

Thanks,

Edward

Answer
Hey Ed, Cerused Oak or Limed Oak is a nice look, but there are several ways to achieve it, and with different degrees of effect...I would suggest a dye stain, Generals waterborne dyes are great, on bare wood, followed by a thin coat of dewaxed shellac or an acrylic urethane, and then rub either a thinned white glaze, or a Liming wax into the pores...it will take some experimentation to get a pleasing effect, and other colors can be used...if you do a Google search on "limed Oak", or "cerused oak" for instance, you should turn up several recipes that will likely all produce a pleasing final finish......hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
