Question
QUESTION: I need to replace my corner kitchen appliance garage door. The original door was a tambour door. The track has broken, and the original cabinet manufacturer  does not carry this hardware anymore. I'd like to have a new panel style door made and have it raise like this
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg041854031415.html
What hardware would I need, and where can I purchase it?
Thank you!

ANSWER: Hi Carol, I'm not aware of any hardware that would allow you to do this type of retrofit...the tambour track could be replaced or repaired however, and there is a track system that can be surface mounted. Whether it would work in your particular situation....I do not know, I'm assuming there is a face frame on your garage.... If the garage can be removed, you could rout some straight grooves in it that would allow a solid door to raise and slide back on pins, as seen in the pic's you sent...but I do not believe there is surface mount hardware that you can buy and mount that way. Feel free to post back- a skilled cabinet maker or good Carpenter should be able to help if your woodworking skills aren't at that level....regards and Happy holidays- Greg

QUESTION: Hi Greg, Thank you for your speedy response. The garage cannot be removed. The original tambour track was plastic. I don't think it can be repaired. I've attached a photo. Any ideas?

Merry Christmas!

Answer
The garage can be removed...but it might be a large task, requiring you to remove some of the adjacent cabinets..that does indeed have a fairly deep face frame, so trying to retrofit this with another door type would mean you'll have to install a parallel rail system of some type to mount the door to....inside the garage...not a job for the average DIY'er...even to properly repair and remount the tambour, the garage would likely have to removed to access the interior from the rear...there's no way to do it from the front.
