Question
Rotten door frame
Rotten door frame
Hi Greg,

I know this is not directly related to furniture, but it is about wood, and I was so impressed by your profile that I'm sure you'll be great help.
The image attached is a door frame of an external door in my house. The house was built in 2006, but for some uncomprehensible circumstances this frame rot really bad in that corner. What would you recommend to repair the wood there?

Thanks in advance,

Rick

Answer
Hey Rick, looks like water is getting behind the trim,and/or being wicked up via the end grain, and this is usually because it isn't properly flashed up above or sealed below. The only way to fix this is to remove the trim, stop the water infiltration, and re trim the door properly with new wood, inspect and caulk the final job. There are also trim boards and moldings made now that are not wood, but plastic composites like Azek, and others....Home Depot carries a pretty full product line of this stuff. It works just like wood,(cuts, drill, holds fasteners, paints) but is highly resistant to rot and water damage. There is no quick fix once something is rotted to this extent. If it's above your skill set, have a couple of reputable carpenters come in and give you estimates. Hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
