Question
In stripping down an upholstered club chair, I have found metal straps which were used as a means of support for nylon webbing underneath the metal springs. The straps were placed underneath the nylon webbing. The metal straps were attached to the oak frame with large staples. The problem is that two of the metal straps were found to be unattached at the chair frame at one end. The staples worked themselves loose.
I am concerned that if I try to reattach them, the same thing will happen again, as the straps are not long enough to wrap around the side of the frame of the chair. My upholstery supplier does not carry these kinds of straps. The chair was comfortable with the loose strapping, but I would like to be sure I do the best thing.
AnswerHi,
The metal straps are a very important part of the seating support and should not be removed or left loose. You could try to re attach the straps with a wood screw - be certain to use a washer with the screw so the screw head does not penetrate the metal over time. You may want to add a screw to all the other staples that are still in place.
You will not notice any difference in seating comfort.
If you want to replace the straps with straps that extend to the side of the chair - where they should have been attached - then you should be able to buy new straps in a shipping supplies store since these straps are also used to close wooden crates. Make certain the straps are metal and not the plastic straps that are sometimes used. Similar metal tape is also available in hardware stores and is called "plumbers tape" which is used to hold pipes to walls. Plumbers tape has holes spaced in it so that may be easier to install.
I hope this helps.
