Question
Hi Jamie,

Im trying your method of watco danish oil on my mahogany dining table.  So far so beautiful but im just wondering how long i need to let the final coat of oil set before applying the johnson paste wax.

Thank you,
Peggy

Answer
Peggy,

At the end of my finishing sequence (after the first two coats are dry) I apply a very light coat of Watco, then wipe it off. Watco only soaks in deeply during the first coat or two; then it starts to build up in the pores. So that third coat won't penetrate very much at all.

You can apply the wax at the same time as you apply that third coat of oil. I usually just wipe the oil on, making sure that everything looks like it's been wet by the oil. Then wipe it off.

Then, I'll apply a nice light coat of the wax, and buff it off before it dries too much. If the wax dries on the wood, it can streak your finish.  So wipe it off fairly soon after putting it on. Don't wax too big of an area at once, or you'll have sore arms from all the buffing!

The wax really gives the wood a "finished" polish and feel, and it's quite nice. A great way to cap off an oiled piece.

Good luck, hope this helps,
