Question
We just installed new oak stairs. This includes the railings and balustrades. We will staining the staircase and would like to know what step-by-step (no pun intended!) process you advise use to help us achieve a professional finish? What type stain and brand do you prefer?  How do you suggest we apply the stain? What finish would use to protect the staircase? Thank you.

Answer
The only finish I ever worked with was lacquer where a staircase was concerned.  The best was always a pre catalytic lacquer that has the primer mixed in.  Satin or semi-gloss.  Three coats, all sprayed on and sanded in between each coat with 300 to 500 grit sand papers.  For stain, I've always used the off the shelf Watco oils or Minwax.  These are both oils and need to be applied and allowed to dry for a couple of days before lacquering.  Thank you.

I can answer all staircase balustrade questions where handrails, newels posts, balusters (wood and metal), and stair treads are concerned. I cannot help with cabinetry and floor (outside of stair-related treads and risers), as well as stain and finish issues unless staircase related.
