Question
QUESTION: I have a Victorian style chair with springs in the seat. I have stripped the chair down to the frame. Do I have to replace the springs? If I don't have to replace the springs, can I just use webbing and foam?

The chair will be used more for decoration than actual seating.

ANSWER: Hello Gretchen,

No,  you do not have to replace the springs if they still have good tension.

Regardless if you use new springs or not, the order from top to bottom is webbing, springs,  burlap,  foam,  then a layer of cotton batting or Dacron batting over the foam will look better and then the upholstery fabric.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: WOW thanks for the speedy response!    I don't think I was clear.  I want to take the springs out and leave them out permanently.   Can I take the springs out and leave them out permanently without ever putting them back in the chair?

Answer
Hello Gretchen,

Yes,  to do that remove everything from the seat,  including the springs and nail or staple the webbing on top of the frame edge instead of the bottom.  Then the foam over the webbing,  batting if you like, and then fabric.  I hope this helps.
