Question
We have had a supposedly expert cabinet maker produce over $300,000 of cabinetry for a large penthouse apartment in Northern New Jersey. We used exotic woods ie satin wood, anagre,
and imported maple. Yet the finished panels are a blotch  of colors, light, dark and in between. Do you know an expert who can critique the job?

Answer
Not sure what that would gain you if the finishing is now done....reversing this would be a HUGE undertaking...can you send some pictures as well as the finishing schedule, (complete with stain/finish product list)? Maple is prone to blotching, and therefore toning and other techniques are usually employed to minimize blotching, but it does take a knowledgeable finisher with experience and skill to produce a high quality finished product on Maple, especially softer Maples. On a job of that scope, finish samples should also have been done BEFORE committing to the entirety of the cabinetry......as reversing this is an undertaking that I don't even like thinking about....as I'm sure you don't either....anyone can build a decent cabinet...the skill lies in the finishes, and they are a closely guarded secret in the industry, because that's what sets each company apart...the quality and durability of their finishes.......state of the art finishing is an art, and especially on high end cabinetry...
