Question
I recently purchased an old buffet at a local thrift shop. It is a wonderful piece - solid wood with great style. The one exception is the high gloss top. We would like to "dull" or "flatten" the glossy surface but don't know what kind of finish was used. we believe it is a lacquer but can't be sure. Any suggestions for how to get rid of the gloss?
Without testing the surface it will be difficult to tell...lacquer thinner will melt lacquer if rubbed with a cloth in a little inconspicuous area...and it will not melt a Varnish (or polyurethane)...the ideal way would be to wet sand the surface and re-coat it with a new coat or 2 of the gloss level you want...but you need to know what the coating is.If this is not something you've done before,or feel confident doing, you could call in a Pro to evaluate it with you....hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
