Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/orange/red tone on pine cabinets

Question
HI Greg,
I have kitchen cabinets that are from the 70's made of knotty pine. They are very orangey and dated. I would like to try to tone them down myself to help update the kitchen somewhat. Do you have any advice about changing them without paint. Would love any advice you could offer.

Answer
Hi Debbie, the only way to even hope to change them would be to chemically strip the old finish off with stripper and then stain and refinish...the only problem is that aging Pine takes on that amber/orange color naturally. Exposure to UV light, oxidation, and aging will cause woods to change color, and a soft wood like Pine suffers more than some others. If you've decided to make a change no matter what, then I would take a door or drawer front and have at it...strip it completely with stripper and see what you're left with...then you can try some experimentation with color and finish, but be warned...if the wood has taken on this orange/amber coloration...it may not lose it when stripped, which will leave you few alternatives- let me know how you make out- I'll be here- regards- Greg
