Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Harvest Tables

Question
Jamie - I am a amateur woodworker, having received some of my grandfathers talent, making rough furniture from Scratch. I would very much like to build a harvest table for my new house in Virginia. We would like it to be similar to the table seen in the movie Practical Magic. I am good at following plans and direction, so I was wondering if there was a resource out there that could help me design and build such a table. I've allready gotten some great ideas from your site btw. Thanks for all of you advice!

Answer
Hi Trey,

While I'm not familiar with the exact table you mentioned (in the movie -Practical Magic) I think I can give you a few places to look at.

First, try this particular link for an actual plan:
http://www.americanwoodworker.com/aspx/contentdetail.aspx?ContentId=1245&PageNo=...

I think that article might be of help, but you may have to tweak it a bit if it's not exactly what you want.

Next, here's a site I often use for locating plans: http://www.woodworkersworkshop.com/
You can do a search on that site to locate just about anything. And most of the plans are free. Sweet!

Last- there is a company that specializes in selling table legs. Here's their link: http://www.tablelegs.com/

They sell many types of legs, table base kits, and so on, and their site is pretty informative about how a table goes together. So you might want to look at their kits, specifically the various components such as aprons, corner blocks, etc. and then use the plan from up above for advice about dimensions, etc. With that information (dimensions and construction details) you should shouldn't have too much trouble coming up with your own plan.

Hope this helps, write back if you need more information. Tables are my specialty, and I highly recommend looking at Kim Carleton Graves's book called Dining Tables, published by Taunton Press.  (Published 2001 ISBN 978-1-56158-491-8) It has plans for tables in a variety of styles, and if it doesn't have the exact plan you want, you'll can adapt it.

OK, good luck, I hope this helps. Please feel free to write back if you have any further questions after reading this. And if this answer was helpful... please take a minute and rate my service. Thanks!
