Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Old mahogany dresser with "plastic-like" finish

Question
Hi, I just bought a mahogany bedroom dresser that was bought/manufactured in 1930. It is in very good condition, probably because about 20 years ago it was refinished with some sort of polyurethane or plastic-type finish, which is sort of bubbled all over. If you run your hand across it, it feels like rough formica. How do I get rid of that layer of bad finish so I can polish up the original lovely wood?

Answer
Hi Anne
Nice to hear from you.
The only way to get rid of this finish is a complete strip and a new finish applied.
And certainly worth the effort for a mahogany dresser from the 30's.
If you need help with the process get back to me.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
