Question
I have 20 year old oak kitchen cabinets that I'd like to paint off white so that the grain shows through. Can this be done? If so, exactly how do I prepare the wood and what type of paint or stain is recommended? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Lynn
Nice to hear from you.
In my opinion, these cabinets will need to be stripped of all finish before applying the white stain (or watered down latex white paint.
Then a top coat or two of poly, but use water based poly as the oil based will yellow over time.
Good Luck

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
