Question
Why is Pledge supposedly so bad for furniture? I've heard that it can make refinishing a piece very difficult. Is this true? How can you remove it without damaging the finish underneath? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jesse
Nice to hear from you.
I like this question.
It reminded me of watching my Mother "Pledge" her furniture every Friday afternoon without fail.
Some of this furniture is proudly residing in my own home now...original finish not damaged....BUT...apparently any furniture polish that contains silicone is not good for the finish on furniture. Its been a long time since I had a can of Pledge in my house, but look to see if it contains silicone.
I can tell you that pledge or any other polish does not in any way make refinishing a piece difficult.
Pledge cannot do battle with paint stripper..no chance LOL.
If you are concerned by all means remove it.
Use a rag dipped in some mineral spirits.
If you find the buildup is heavy, the only way I can get that off is to dip super fine steel wool in the spirits and gently rub.
Then a nice paste waxing....no more Pledge.
Good Luck and a great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
