Question
Hi! I am wanting to refinish my daughters dresser.
The wood is a oak med. dark oak. I am wanting to stain it a antique white. I know there will be staining envolved. Can you tell me what else will need to be done.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Stephanie
Nice to hear from you.
Of course it sounds like you know that the dresser will need to be stripped before you apply any stain...white or otherwise.
And I will not tell you what I think of staining oak white LOL.
But after any stain, a top finish of some kind will need to be applied.
In this case you could apply a poly because the damage will already be done..oops LOL, I said I would not mention what I thought of staining oak white.
Seriously though you could apply a poly or an oil finish.
An oil finish would be easy to apply if you have not done much of this type of work.
Look for tung oil at the hardware and apply several coats with a rag.
Hope this helps
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
