Question
Hello, I'm in the middle of renovating my 1926 home.  I have an original door set that has a silver-colored finish to it on one side of the door but was painted several times on the other side.  I've removed the set from the door and now don't know how to remove the paint on the one side.  Would regular paint remover ruin the "silver" finish?  I'm familiar with how to use paint remover on wood and porcelain, but I hesitate to try it on this beautiful door set...but something strong will be needed to get the layers of paint off.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Amy
Nice to hear from you.
Yes paint stripper is the only thing to get the paint off the handle.
I have never had paint stripper ruin any metal.
Always a spot test first though but you will not have any problems.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
