Question
Do you know of any books or videos that show how to replace canvas?  Will glue
adhere to new canvas without washing out sizing first?  Does glue go on wood
slats or canvas?  How do you keep slats straight?  How do you attach the first
piece which is the handle?  I saw it all in a book years ago when I first took apart
top; now I can't find book back.

Answer
Hi Karen
Nice to hear from you.
Don't know of any books on the subject, but there are some instructions on line.
I found this one, but there are more.

The only thing I disagree with in the instructions is the clamping together of the slats, but perhaps this is only to keep them in place.
Shouldn't have to wash the canvas, and keep the slats square by using a carpenters square or a drywall square which is larger.
I would attach the handle piece last.
Hope this helps

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
