Question
To make a long story short-
I took a player piano in to be fixed, part of the deal was stripping and refinishing.  They had it a long time. The finish wasn't too bad when they took it- just kind of dull looking-a few months back one owner said it had not been refinished, the other said it had.  When I went to look at it - it was a pretty finish, but I noticed the residue of wax on the top- how do I tell if it has been really stripped etc or just an excellent wax job?

Answer
Hi Frances
Nice to hear from you.
It should be fairly easy to tell if this piano has been completely stripped and refinished by looking at it but I get the feeling you think "There's something rotten in Denmark" LOL
Its possible they waxed after refinishing so do not rule that out.
Its also possible they re-amalgamated the finish too.
And if you cannot tell, I wonder if the job actually needed doing and they simply waxed the piano and are mixed up about it...or there really is something rotten here LOL.
How much were you charged for the job? Its usually a hefty price for a complete refinish.
Get back to me.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
