Question
I was given my father's furniture that is solid teak.  (hutch, sideboard, table, chairs, end tables coffee table).  But, he smoked cigars.  The teak was oiled frequently.  How can I clean this to get the smell out and the stickiness gone?

Answer
Hi Lynda
Nice to hear from you.
The only way that I know of to get this stickiness off is with mineral spirits (hardware store).
In Canada this same product is called varsol ...don't know why LOL
You are going to be amazed at the dirt this will take off.
For heavy dirt I use a super fine steel wool pad dipped in the varsol. Then rub with the grain. Keep lots of clean rags on hand to dry as you go.
For lighter dirt just a rag dipped in the varsol will do.
But this sounds heavy.
Of course this will remove the cigar smell also, but if you find "it lingers", it could be it has permeated the unfinished areas of wood (under the table, chairs etc.)
Just wipe with a rag dipped in the varsol, or a mild household bleach solution.
Then a nice oiling and your set is like new. No oil on unfinished areas of course LOL.
Thats it.
Good Luck and great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
