QuestionHi,
I have a indoor hot tub in my basement and I would like to know what type upholstery for my basement furniture would ward off mildew. There is not an exhaust fan near the hot tub only a window. I wanted to know besides purchasing a dehumidifier what type of upholstery would work in this situation. Thanks
AnswerHi,
Great question, in my opinion if you purchase a dehumidifier you should not have much of a problem. Mildew tends to grow on the inside of cushions where it is dark rather than on the surface. To prevent that from happening you should avoid naugahyde, canvas or leather fabric since they trap water.
If you plan to have cushions, use a type of foam that does not hold water. Water gets trapped in ordinary foam which acts like a sponge, the trapped water inside the foam is the cause of mildew. Purchase "reticulated" foam. reticulated foam does not hold water, it is a little difficult to find and has a higher price and usually has to be special ordered. Try Foamorder.com they may have it, or if they don't stock it may order it for you.
Also make certain your cushions have plastic zippers and if buttons aluminum button molds rather than metal to avoid rusting.
I hope this information is of help to you, please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
